SULTAN ABU BAKAR MOSQUE

"Rising majestically into the skies is the over 100-year old Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, the state mosque of Johor located on a hilltop overlooking the scenic Straits of Johor. It was built in 1891-1900 under the direction of the late Sultan Abu Bakar who ruled Johor from 1862 to 1895. Tuan Haji Mohamed Arif bin Punak was the renowned architect behind this historical mosque, that was largely influenced by English Victorian architecture. Impressively built, the mosque features a blend of Islamic and colonial design with its single layer pyramid style roof accompanied by four grand minarets that mimic an old Victorian clock tower. The interiors boast Roman pillars and big colonial-style windows that adorn the prayer hall. Materials used in construction were imported from all over the world; the window arcades from Turkey, the chandeliers from Czechoslovakia and the marble from Italy. Even egg whites were used and mixed with sand and other materials in the cement to give the mosque its appearance of grandeur."
