AL-ATTAS MOSQUE

"Distinguished as the first mosque in Johor during the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar, the Al-Attas Mosque built in 1869 by Habib Hassan Bin Ahmad Al-Attas, a Malay priest (ulama) and businessman of Arabian origin was also known as “First Mile Mosque” (Masjid Batu Satu). As the main assembly point for Johor Muslims during that era, the mosque was later renovated in 2003 to become a spacious, modern double-storey place of worship. ABOUT AL-ATTAS FAMILY AND HABIB HASSAN The many contributions of the Al-Attas Family were pivotal to promoting and defending the Islamic doctrine in Malaysia. Thanks to Habib Hassan’s business expansion that gained him a large circle of influential friends, his frequent travels to Singapore led him to build good relations with Sultan Abu Bakar. Soon after, the Al-Attas Family moved to Kluang, Johor and they then settled down in Johor Bahru. Incidentally, the first residence of the Al-Attas Family in Johor Bahru is now the locale of the Johor Military Force. The legend continues as Syed Salim bin Hassan Al-Attas, the son of Habib Hassan was born here and he became a prominent Muslim priest just like his father."
