HISTORY OF JOHOR BAHRU Johor Bahru city was founded in 1855 as Tanjong Puteri by Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim. Sultan Ali Ibni Sultan Husain Syah ceded the sovereignty rights of Johor (except Kesang in Muar) to Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim on 10th March 1855. Thus, Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim, who originated from Telok Belanga, Singapore, developed his new administration centre in Tanjong Puteri. He set up an office at Bukit Bendera, which is now known as Bukit Timbalan and the new administration centre was later be known as Iskandar Puteri. The old administration located in Telok Belanga still remained in operation. Upon Temenggong Ibrahim’s demise on 31st January 1862, his son, Temenggong Abu Bakar succeeded the crown. Under the administration of Temenggong Abu Bakar, Iskandar Puteri grew rapidly in terms of population and socio-economic progress. On 1st January 1866, the Istana Besar was officially opened and Iskandar Puteri was ceremonially renamed Johor Bahru by Temenggong Abu Bakar. The year 1866 marked the beginning of effective government in Johor.
