Johor Bahru, commonly known as JB, is the state capital of Johor, Malaysia. It is situated at the southernmost point of Peninsular Malaysia, on the north bank of the Straits of Johor, across from Singapore. The city has a population of 1,711,191 within an area of 220 square kilometers. It is next to Iskandar Puteri and Pasir Gudang, and together with their surrounding areas, makes up Malaysia's second largest urban area, Iskandar Malaysia, with a population of 2,500,000.

Johor Bahru was founded in 1855 as Tanjung Puteri, when the Sultanate of Johor was under the influence of Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim. The city was renamed "Johor Bahru" in 1862 and it became the capital of the Sultanate when the Sultanate's administrative center was moved there from Telok Blangah, which is now located within southern Singapore.


Position and topography

Johor Bahru is the southernmost city in Peninsular Malaysia and even the entire Eurasian continent. It is near the equator, located at 1°29′ N latitude and 103°44′ E longitude. It is located at the northern end of the Straits of Johor and is bordered by the cities of Pasir Gudang, Iskandar Puteri and Gelang Patah to the east, west, and northwest respectively, and faces the city-state of Singapore across the sea to the south. The city has an elevation of about 32 meters and the terrain slopes downwards from north to south, with undulating surface, wide distribution of plains and swamps and many winding rivers. In 2000, Johor Bahru's administrative area expanded from 12.12 square kilometers (4.68 square miles) in 1933 to 220 square kilometers (85 square miles) and further expanded to 391.25 square kilometers (151.06 square miles) in 2015.
