Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque is a Johor state mosque located in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. This mosque was officially opened by Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Abu Bakar in 1900. This mosque was named Abu Bakar Mosque because it took the name of the late Sultan Abu Bakar Daeng Ibrahim who ordered its construction in 1892 at a cost of more than $400,000.
The mosque that was built on top of a hill on the coast of the Tebrau Strait has 4 minarets that resemble the White Mosque, Terengganu and West Asian countries, especially in Egypt. The tower is 2 stories round on top and square below and domed. This mosque can accommodate about 3000 Muslims praying.
The architecture of this mosque building was designed by Tuan Haji Muhammad Arif bin Punak under the mastery of Yang Berbhagia engineer Datuk Yahya bin Awaluddin. This mosque is also a landmark that proves that Malay engineers are also capable of building large, beautiful and strong buildings like in Europe and Arab lands at the end of the 19th century.
The building is square and influenced by the characteristics of Islamic architecture. This mosque is rectangular with 4 porches, each of which has a dome tower.
