The estuary of the early Sungai Segget was a marshy area with jungle on both sides. It was only after the development of Johor Bahru in 1855 that Sungai Segget was noticed. Sungai Segget is 3.7km long and the river flows towards Jalan Wong Ah Fook Street and extends to the Johor Strait.

According to historical records, Sungai Segget got its name because Sungai Segget had a sluice Gate, so "Sungai Segget" is a homonym of "Sea Gate".

Sungai Segget used to be a clear river with boats passing by and children playing on the river. However, it was later called "smelly river" because it became polluted with the progress of the times.

Sungai Segget's revamp plan is divided into three phases, with the first and second phases mainly being “Construction of Sg Segget Integrated Water Treatment Plant (IWTP)” and “Construction of Flood Mitigation System and Sewerage System” which were completed in April 2017.

Phase 3 is “Sungai Segget Landscaping and Upgrading of Jalan Wong Ah Fook Project”. When these plans are completed, the clean environment of the river will bring more opportunities for neighboring businesses.  The renovation plan will help attract more tourists and boost tourism.
